This site is dedicated to the past and present Town Sergeants of the City of Southampton.

The postition of Town Sergeant has been in existance for some 700 years. Even today, the position is still performing a critical function to the Mayor and the City of Southampton, just as it did from its initial conception.

This site contains information aggregated from several sources, most notibily the book 'Southampton's Town Sergeants A Brief History' by Paul J. Tickner. Further content has been provided by Barry Dunnings. Both Barry and Paul are current serving Town Sergeants.

The first references to the Town Sergeants were in an ancient volume known as The Oak Book. This volume was written in Anglo-Norman, believed to be in the early fourteenth century. The site has been made into sections for each century of the service of the City of Southampton Town Sergeants.

Although this is dedicated to the subject of Town Sergeants, there is a very good History of Southampton that can be read in conjunction to give a full picture of life in Southampton over the past centuries. Links to this can be found on this page http://www.localhistories.org/southampton.html
